About Quartzite Falls
Quartzite Falls is one of the standout waterfalls in the Baraga area — water flows over chunky slate before sliding into a pool more than 50 feet wide. It's very easy to reach by passenger car, no 4x4 needed, set in an open hemlock forest with yellow birch, maple, white pine, and cedar mixed in.
The falls sit above the Slate River Gorge, where several other waterfalls are found, just upstream of Black Slate Falls. The riverbed here is black slate laced with long veins of quartz running diagonally across it, most about 8 to 24 inches wide. With rubber boots or water shoes you can wade across the river above or below the falls, or simply cross the bridge for a view from the other side. It's a picturesque, relaxing spot — just be careful, the slate can be slippery.
